Last Friday, I had the pleasure of seeing the burgeoning Danish band Liss at San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop. With a hand in heart I must say, it was probably one of the most celestial live performances I’ve seen in a while.
The young four-piece made up of Søren Holm (vocals), Vilhelm Strange (guitar), Villads Tyrrestrup (bass), and Tobias Hansen (drums) were on their first US tour promoting their debut EP, First, which to my great joy they played in its entirety. I watched the crowd sway side-to-side, attentively consumed by the soulful coos, 80s synths and gleaming guitar lines the band delivered so effortlessly. Lead singer Søren was enchanting, his vocals spine-tingling, Prince-esque even, as he delivered tales of love and relationship struggles with pure heart-felt serenity.
The band recently signed to XL Recordings and has been collaborating with producer Rodaidh McDonald who’s also played a hand in careers of The xx, Savages, and King Krule.
I’m excited to see what these boys will cook up next. I’m also entirely confident that they will continue winning hearts over, just as they did mine that night.
To get you a bit more acquainted with one of Denmark’s most promising acts, we spoke to the band via email about the tour, their sound, and what they’ve been listening to lately.
Hey guys! How’s the tour going so far? Any highlights or favorite moments?
The tour has been great! It was our first time ever being in the states, which was really exciting! We have been to a lot of great cities and have met a lot of nice people here. Crazy that anyone actually showed up to the shows!
How would you describe your sound?
That’s a hard question. We care about making the songs sound fresh and new. But the most important thing for us is that you can feel and hear a lot of emotion and hear that it sounds real.
You all come from different musical backgrounds, how do think your unique sound came about?
We actually try to exploit the fact that we come from four different musical backgrounds. That’s how we got our unique sound we believe.
Talk to us about First EP, which is phenomenal by the ways. Was there a vision/idea behind it or did it all come together naturally?
Thank you very much! We think that it all came together really naturally, or we basically just tried to write four songs that we were into. The only vision we had perhaps was that we wanted the songs to sound different from our singles “Try” and “Always”.
What inspires you these days?
At the moment we get inspired by all the new places that we visit and the new people we meet on the way.
What’s on your playlist these days?
We are currently listening to all kinds of music, but we are tripping over new music from James Blake, Kaytranada, Anhoni, and the song “Pick Up Your Phone” by Young Thug and Travis Scott has been on repeat these days.
What’s the best part of being in a band?
Seeing parts of the world that you’ve never seen before with your best friends, and doing what you love the most.
