Besides having the voice of an angel, Chicago singer Jamila Woods is also an incredible storyteller throughout her first debut project. Her new album HEAVN maintains 13 tracks and follows up her feature on Chance The Rapper’s “Blessings” track from his Coloring Book album. Collaborations on HEAVN include Donnie Trumpet, Chance The Rapper, Saba, Noname, and Lorine Chia. Throughout the project, Woods unveils her perceptions of Chicago and the interconnected experiences of being Black and becoming a woman.
In a recent press release, the singer shares the concept behind her debut project: “HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in — I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.”
