Joy Postell Pays Homage to Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and More in “Consciousness” Video

Los Angeles-Baltimore singer Joy Postell shares a powerful video for her song “Consciousness”, a song about the state of being alert about social issues in the Black community. Postell encourages her community to stand up for themselves and protect their minds in a time where consumerism and music without messaging can cause distraction from the issues at hand. In her video, she channels four historical Black women, including Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Angela Davis (activist), and Celie from The Color Purple film, embracing courage and freedom along the way. You can watch the video below while Postell prepares for her debut project, Diaspora.
