Princess Nokia Channels Her Afro-Latina Roots in New Video for “Brujas”

The Bronx-based rapper Destiny Frasqueri otherwise known as Princess Nokia drops new, mystifying visuals for the track “Brujas” off her latest project 1992. At 24 years old, the female empowering lyricist has established quite a name for herself in NYC’s underground rap scene. Produced by Blanco & DJ Bass Bear, the bouncy yet raw sound in “Brujas” gives us just one layer to the story as Frasqueri and her soul-searching sisters channel their spiritual roots.

With unapologetic verses like “Don’t you fuck with my energy”, “I’m the black-a-rican Bruja straight out from the Yoruba” and “I’m a shapeshifting bitch you don’t know who you loving”, Princess Nokia seamlessly portrays her authoritative and fierce brown girl magic. Princess Nokia co-directed the video alongside Turkish filmmaker, Asli Baykal and the two reel us into a wooded forest where mystical chants, rituals and powerful gestures are omnipresent.

Watch the video as Princess Nokia explores her diasporic roots and advocates feminism and individuality in a truly authentic way.
