Swedish-Barbadian singer Naomi Pilgrim uses her growing platform to urge listeners to end friendships with any “Racist Friend” they may have. Featuring U.S. rapper Sa-Roc and South African rapper Yugen Blakrok, the song calls for taking a stand in your own relationships and holding loved ones accountable for their racism or discrimination. While many protest songs talk about taking major steps in fighting injustice, Pilgrim’s cover of The Specials’ “Racist Friend” track caters to the everyday steps we can take around us.
“Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt the need to act, but instead you looked the other way? As long as we’re hiding within our comfort zone, keeping our mouth shut, we’re not going to have an equal society and that’s the message of this song. Silence enables the growing hate and that’s why oppression needs to be addressed at all times. Speak out! You’re needed, every single day.”
