Just in time for the weekend, genre-defying artist and producer Kweku Saunderson releases his latest single “Checkin”, and we’re entirely all about it. The track, which features a dynamic guest appearance from fellow New Yorker Dai Burger, is a twinkling Electro-R&B ode to the power of loyalty. With verses about the difficulties of finding a love that’s built to last, the song reaches a celestial peak in its electronic breakdown thanks to co-production by Woodro Skillson.
“Checkin” builds on the sound and energy of Kweku’s first single, “Do Us”, which was featured on the 29th episode of OVO Sound Radio, along with an underground remix by his uncle and Detroit Techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson. Kweku also released a critically acclaimed remix EP with house infused tracks from Frank Ocean’s Blonde (cheekily titled Brunette). Unfortunately, the EP was asked to be pulled from all streaming services despite its 100,000 plays and praises from revered publications.
On the untimely removal of Brunette, Kweku is disappointed but undeterred: “It was an homage to Ocean’s monumental work,” he said. “I wish the two projects could have coexisted, but I get how this industry works. All the positive feedback it got from the jump just makes me excited to keep sharing what I do with the world.”
“Checkin” is available on all streaming platforms. Listen here.
